Biceps Tenodesis, Tenotomy, or Repair
Biceps Tenodesis, Tenotomy, or Repair may be recommended if you have sustained a biceps tendon rupture or have biceps tendinopathy i.e., inflammation and/or degeneration.
Benefits of Surgery
Alleviate Chronic Pain
By addressing the damaged portion of the biceps tendon, these procedures effectively reduce or eliminate the persistent pain associated with biceps tendinopathy or tendon tears.
Restore Arm Strength & Function
Whether through reattachment (biceps tenodesis/repair) or releasing the painful portion (tenotomy), the goal is to improve the strength and functional use of your arm for lifting and bending.
Improve Cosmesis (Tenodesis/Repair)
For biceps tendon rupture, biceps tenodesis or repair can prevent the visible "Popeye" muscle deformity, providing a more natural contour to the arm.
Procedure Information
Dr Richmond has sub-specialist expertise in Shoulder Surgery.
Following a thorough assessment, including physical examination, MRI, and consideration of your activity level – surgery may be recommended.
Biceps Tenodesis
The damaged portion of the biceps tendon is released from its original attachment and reattached to a different, more stable bone location (often the humerus). This preserves biceps function and muscle contour.
Biceps Tenotomy
The damaged portion of the biceps tendon is simply released (cut) from its attachment. This alleviates pain but may result in some weakness.
Biceps Repair (for distal ruptures)
For tears of the biceps tendon near the elbow, the tendon is surgically reattached to the bone through a smallskin incision.
Tearing or inflammation of the biceps tendon, resulting in pain, weakness, and sometimes a visible bulge.
Conditions Treated
During your consultation, Dr Richmond will carefully evaluate your condition and discuss all management options with you, including non-surgical treatments, so you can confidently decide on the right path forward.
